Akai ldp8 review and mapping

The Akai ldp8 is a cheap and versatile handy device (49$), perfect for beginners, and highly customisable for power users.

It has some realy interesting features, but has also some issues that can be annoying.

Pros :

  • It has 8 nicely built drum pads,
  • It has a CC mode and a midi mode, and 4 programmable banks, which made 64 midi messages that can be triggered.
  • It has 8 knobs.
  • It’s cheap and light weight.

Cons :

  • LEDS on the drums are a bit tricky to program properly,
  • The firmware does not handle properly soft takeover for the knobs, so you can’t assign knobs on the different banks.
  • It’s cheap and light weight.

You’ll find my dedicated page in the controllerism section of the site.
